General Rules and Policies

Welcome to the Howell’s 140 Ice Den Men’s Hockey League (HIDMHL).  This league is designed for those who wish to play for the love of the game regardless of ability.  We ask all players to remember this is a recreational non-checking league, there are no scouts in the stands.

  • Team payment is due before skating the first game of the season.
  • If a player is neither rostered or paid they will not play until that is completed.
  • All players are required to register online through the 140 Ice Den website for each new season they intend to participate in.
  • Players must have a minimum of 5 games during the regular season to be eligible for the playoffs.  Spring season will not have playoffs.
  • No refunds will be granted after the individual player has completed two games (exceptional circumstances will be considered and ruled on by the league director).
  • Both pucks and players must stay off the ice until the zamboni is done and the doors are closed. No exceptions.
  • No touch icing.

Games will be three, 13 minute running clock periods with 30 second break in between periods.  3 minute warm-up.  Curfew clock set at 50 minutes.

  • If overtime is required; there will be a 5 minute 4v4 sudden death overtime.  There will be another 30 second break prior to the start of overtime.  Each win is 2 points, tie is 1 point, and a loss is 0 points.
  • Each team is allowed a 1 minute time out.
  • If a player loses a helmet they must immediately put it back on or leave the ice, otherwise a penalty may be awarded at the discretion of the referee.
  • Chin straps must be done up.
  • If a goaltender loses any gear that may compromise their safety, the play will be whistled dead.
  • If a goalie is hit in the head or mask with a puck, the referees will stop play at their discretion.
  • If any player is cut during a game and blood is drawn, the player must leave the ice immediately.
  • Checking is not permitted and will result in a penalty.
  • Goalies must replace themselves from the spare goalie list if they cannot make the scheduled game.
  • There will not be substitutions of rostered players when a team is able to field a minimum of 10 skaters and a goalie.  The exception of this rule will be for goalies or if you have under 10 skaters.  You may allow a substitute from another team. Someone from outside the league must pay the score keeper their drop-in rate of $15..
  • Sub players must play in a minimum of 5 regular season games to be eligible for playoffs.

Team captains/managers will be emailed prior to playoffs a list of players that are eligible to play.

  • Minor penalties will be two minutes in duration.  If a player receives four minor penalties in a game they will sit out the remainder of that game.
  • Players receiving a game misconduct penalty are suspended for the remainder of that game and the following game.
  • During fights, the clock does NOT stop unless there is an injury.
  • Any player who receives their first fighting major will follow USA Hockey rules. Second fighting major within the same season will result in a 3 game suspension. Third fighting major within the same season will result in a 5 game suspension.  Further fighting penalties will be subject to review by the league director.
  • Verbal abuse of referees will result in an automatic game suspension and suspension from the next league game. A second verbal abuse incident will result in an automatic game suspension and a three game suspension for the remainder of the season.  Physical abuse of a referee will result in an automatic suspension from the league for life.
  • League director reserves the right to review any penalties and issue supplementary discipline to players deemed guilty of any actions deemed dangerous, or detrimental to the game and/or league.  Thus, organizers reserve the right to bar players from any remaining games in the schedule.

Any player found playing in a league game while under suspension will have their suspension doubled at a minimum.  The team playing with the suspended player will forfeit the game for a 1-0 loss.

  • Goalie penalties: If a goalie takes three penalties in a game they can finish the game, but will be suspended from playing in the following game.
  • Each team must have matching, numbered jerseys.
